Hello,

My name is Eric Nykamp. I am an artist living in Grand Rapids Michigan. 吳青玉 (Ching Yu Wu ) Jenny send me an email on the Chinese Culture Center webpage about your organization. My wife is from Hong Kong and I have been deeply impacted by her cultural heritage. Over the past few years, I have been exploring how to express our Christian faith through a Chinese aesthetic and have been developing a body of paintings about this. These “spiritual self-portraits” are something that I would deeply like to use as a way to have conversations with both Chinese Christians and non-Christian Chinese people.

I would like more information on what your group does and if there would be any way that I could partner with you in the future.

You can email me at

My website (in development) is:

Some examples of my recent work can be found at:

Thank you for your consideration.

Contemporary Art, Community & Public Space: Present Tense Panel Discussion Part 1

With the great success of the Center’s biennial exhibition, Present Tense 2009: Chinese Character, in collaboration with Kearny Street Workshop, we would like to engage the community in a casual, lively, and fun panel discussion regarding the relationship between contemporary art, community building, and public space as a venue for the arts. Among other topics, we will discuss the impact on artists, the community audience, and how exhibitions like Present Tense can bring new and provocative energy into the public scene.

Present Tense Biennial 2009 is funded Grants for the Arts, Tower International, United Commercial Bank, Zellerbach and San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development

Present Tense Biennial 2009 would like to thank the following organizations for collaborative support:
