- Well-known internationally for his abstract painting that synthesizes the rhythm of cursive Chinese calligraphy with an approach to color reminiscent of the symphonic effects achieved by Abstract Expressionism, Professor Lampo Leong uniquely incorporates his profound knowledge of classical and contemporary Western art, Asian brush painting, calligraphy, Western Aesthetics, and Chinese Daoist philosophy into his mixed media acrylic and oil paintings. On his canvases, energies shift and explode to create serenity in an electric manner, celebrating the dynamic tensions that give birth to new life, new planets, and new stars. Since the 1990s, Leong has been recognized as a pioneer artist in integrating digital technologies with fine art creation.
Born in Guangzhou, China, Leong grew up during the Culture Revolution when educational systems in China had collapsed. Through self-study in the early ages and persistent hard work, Leong excelled in the academic world, attended some of the best art colleges in China and the United States, such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (Ph.D.-ABD) and the California College of the Arts (MFA), and becoming an exemplary art professor. He is currently Chair of the Department of Art at the University of Missouri-Columbia and often shares his knowledge and experience, influencing students across the United States, China and Taiwan. He has given more than 100 lectures at institutions such as the University of California at Berkeley, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Stanford University, the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities, Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, and National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei. Leong has also served as juror for many art competitions nationwide, including San Francisco Art Commission, Missouri Arts Council, and the Best of America national juried exhibition.
Leong’s painting and calligraphy have been exhibited extensively worldwide in more then 55 solo and 250 group exhibitions. His work can be found in many important museum collections such as The Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Macau Museum of Art in Macao, and Guangdong Museum of Art in China, as well as hundreds corporate and private collections. His 26-foot-diameter granite inset calligraphic medallion was permanently installed in a city park by the San Francisco Arts Commission. Leong’s artistic contributions have earned him more than 35 awards and much recognition internationally, such as Gold Medal at the XV Exposicao Coltctiva dos Artistas de Macau, Best of Show at the 42nd Sumi-e Society of America Anniversary Juried Exhibition, and most recent, the Faculty-Alumni Award from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Leong’s achievements as an artist and an educator have been featured in more than 800 reviews and publications in newspapers, magazines, books, websites, and on television internationally, including a PBS documentary. He has been recognized in the US Congressional Record, and in 1999, the Mayor of San Francisco, Willie Brown, proclaimed November 19th to be Lampo Leong Day.

Contemporary Art, Community & Public Space: Present Tense Panel Discussion Part 1
With the great success of the Center’s biennial exhibition, Present Tense 2009: Chinese Character, in collaboration with Kearny Street Workshop, we would like to engage the community in a casual, lively, and fun panel discussion regarding the relationship between contemporary art, community building, and public space as a venue for the arts. Among other topics, we will discuss the impact on artists, the community audience, and how exhibitions like Present Tense can bring new and provocative energy into the public scene.
